2023 USRowing Youth National Championships

Our Competitive Race Team athletes recently finished their spring season at the Youth National Championships in Sarasota, Florida. Every year this regatta brings together the best programs from around the country and everyone must qualify through their regional or state championships. Competition takes place in a multi day format that culminates in crowning the National Champion in each event. This year PCRA was represented in the Boys Varsity 8, Boys 2nd Varsity, and Girls U17 4+.

The Boys Varsity 8 led the way, achieving historic results for the program and showing what we are capable of at this level of rowing. The boat started the regatta with a great time trial which put them in a strong position for semi final racing. In the semis, the top 4 boats from each race would move onto the A Final. Using a controlled and powerful start, the guys stayed composed and rowed well within their range through the middle of the race course to put themselves in a qualifying position. Crossing the line, they finished a very close 4th to advance to the A Final for the first time in our 20 year program history. In the A final, the boat was strong and competitive through the race and ended the regatta 8th in the country. A huge congratulations to these athletes and we are really looking forward to building off this result moving forward!

The Girls U17 4+, coming off a New York State Championship, had a good regatta that saw them finish 13th overall. A young boat, these athletes represented PCRA very well throughout the weekend and the coaches feel that their performance both at States and at Nationals shows that Girls team is in a great position heading into the summer and into next fall. The Boys 2nd Varsity 8 had a solid showing as well, placing 24th overall in our first ever appearance at Nationals in the event. Building off their Bronze medal at States, the boat had a great few weeks of practice in preparation for the regatta and returns 8 of the 9 athletes to the team.
